The phone is fast even with the processor calmed to a cool temperature, so it all seems to be about manufacturers' learning curves. Both pre-production versions of the LG G Flex 2 and the One M9 occasionally had overheating issues, and both sets of problems were fixed with software updates. It's starting to look like the chip requires more aggressive limiting than manufacturers initially anticipate, in order to prevent overheating. The Snapdragon 810 heating saga goes on, and it remains a little mysterious.

Those processors aren't widely available in Android devices, though, and the Snapdragon 810, for better or for worse, is the fastest mainstream Android processor available right now. It had excellent results on integer and floating-point math measures, but dragged a bit on graphics compared with more arcane processors like Apple's A8 and Nvidia's K1. In testing, the M9 got very good benchmark scores: 4,180 on PCMark, 3,527 on Geekbench, and 52,185 on 64-bit Antutu. Performance The 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor here shows why you can't look at clock speeds or cores as pure arbiters of performance. That means preloaded system software leaves only 22.9GB of your 32GB available, so it's very nice that you have the memory card slot. It includes the Cloudex cloud-storage software, HTC's Zoe video-sharing app, Zoodles Kid Mode parental controls, and the Scribble drawing-notebook app, to point out a few you might want to replace. Yes, Sense also means there's quite a lot of extra software loaded onto the phone. You're most likely to look at it when you're waiting around somewhere for a few minutes I found it a bit frustrating because I didn't have LTE (as I'll explain below). It weaves together selected news sources, social networks, and even keyword searches into a scrolling feed of interesting content. If you swipe left from your main home screen you'll get to HTC's Flipboard clone, which has been refined and improved. In Out mode it's Facebook, Twitter, Maps, Calendar, and Messages. For instance, I'm now at work, so it's showing Twitter, Mail, Calendar, the Play Store, and Drive. There's a new widget on the home screen which, purportedly, detects whether you're at home, work, or out, surfacing the appropriate apps. HTC's themes, which include fonts, icons, colors, and sounds, are simply more attractive and tasteful than the other manufacturers I've seen. HTC, on the other hand, has both some gorgeous curated themes and a great Web-based theme maker at. They don't know how, they find the process confusing, or they can't choose. Yes, I know you can download third-party themes and launchers for your phone.

HTC has doubled down on its Sense 7 skin this year, with a range of setup and theming experiences that extend the company's tasteful physical design into the virtual world. This may make Android purists recoil, but it's true. The memory card slot is essentially another SIM card slot on the other side of the device, and it worked just fine with our 64GB SanDisk Extreme card in testing.Īndroid and Sense If you buy the HTC One M9, it'll be in part because (not in spite) of Sense, HTC's skin over Android Lollipop 5.0.2.

Samsung should note: I love how HTC manages to integrate a microSD card slot in a phone without a removable back. carriers has its own model of the phone, which may not be compatible with all of the other carriers' models. That last bit is important because each of the four U.S.

For a phone that relies heavily on design, this is distressing.

There are some scratches in the finish along the top, and a rough patch on the right bezel.
